SENIOR'S EXCHANGE DAY - SPALDING GOLF
CLUB - 19TH JUNE '09
Frank and Geoff beat the wind!!
It is early morning in
Scunthorpe, the blackbirds coughed and choked to the fumes of
the steelworks, and the sun just started to break through the
clouds as 48 members of the senior’s section climbed aboard the
charabanc for their annual Exchange day trip to Spalding GC.
With eager anticipation of grand scores and
returning from Spalding with the Dennis Burkitt trophy clutched
tightly in hand the members settled down to a continuation of
their slumber for the two hour journey.
The Spalding course hugs the river Nene for
several of its holes notably the second which challenges the
player to a long drive cutting a bend in the river. Take the
wrong line and there are only two results; the trees down the
right hand side of the fairway or the local ball wash.
The biggest feature of the day was
certainly the wind which gusted and swirled and took balls into
strange territory. One notable ‘wind’ incident was John
Phillipson’s drive from the 15th which swished past
John Dunham’s head on the 14th. John Drust, commonly
known as Drusty, was heard to say “what are you doing over here
John the greens over there”. “I’ll show you where the green is
Drusty” says John and promptly stuffed the ball three feet from
the pin for his first birdie.
The wind was also a significant feature on
the 9th which was the chosen hole for nearest the pin
prize. Standing on the tee with a howling gale into the face was
quite an experience, making the green was going to be a feat in
itself let alone getting close to the pin but John Barsby rose
to the challenge resting his ball seven size twelve boots from
the pin.
The day was thoroughly well organised by
Ian Robinson who got everything right (except leaving a tape to
measure nearest the pin) but he can be forgiven for that as the
members really should be grateful for his organisation ability;
everything that Ian organises goes to plan and runs smoothly.
Three members got two’s and shared sixteen
quid each, enough to get several more bottles of wine and John
Barsby proved that these occasions really should be called John
Barsby benefit matches as he hoovered up three prizes on the
day!

As all of the members enjoyed the excellent
hospitality of the caterers and some fine wines in copious
quantities they all waited to see who, after the award of seven
prizes, would take the trophy.
Geoff Turtle and Frank Foster took the
stage to collect the trophy from Senior’s Captain Peter Hall who
is currently rehearsing for his appearance on ‘Britain’s Got
Talent’ as a stand up comedian.

Dennis is affectionately remembered and it
was good to see the trophy celebrated by his friends.
